About This Word Finder

A free, accurate, and fast tool for discovering words from any set of letters.

What Is This Tool?

This is a free word finder that discovers every valid English word you can form from a set of letters you provide. Whether you're stuck in a game of Scrabble, tackling a word jumble, playing Words With Friends, or just curious about what words hide inside a phrase — this tool does the heavy lifting for you instantly.

Unlike generic anagram solvers, this tool enforces strict letter-frequency rules: each letter in your input can only be used as many times as it actually appears. This makes it genuinely useful for tile-based word games where your rack is fixed.

How It Works

Type any combination of letters into the search box and click Find. The tool queries the Datamuse Word API — a dedicated English dictionary and word-search engine — to retrieve real dictionary words matching your letters, following strict rules:

  • Each letter in your input can only be used as many times as it appears.
  • Words must be at least 2 letters long.
  • The search covers every possible word length from 2 letters up to your full input length (maximum 10).
  • Results are grouped by word length so you can quickly spot 2-letter, 3-letter, 4-letter words, and beyond.
  • Click any word in the results to see its full dictionary definition, including phonetics and example usage.

The tool uses a two-pass search strategy: first, a character-class pattern query to find words made from your specific letters; second, a wildcard query to catch high-frequency common words that the first pass might miss. Both result sets are merged, deduplicated, and filtered client-side for accuracy.

Who Is This For?

This tool is designed for anyone who plays word games, works with language, or simply enjoys exploring vocabulary:

  • Scrabble & crossword players — find high-scoring words from your tile rack, especially useful when you're stuck with difficult letter combinations.
  • Word game enthusiasts — solve jumbles, anagrams, and puzzle challenges in seconds.
  • Students & educators — explore vocabulary and spelling patterns for learning and teaching.
  • Writers & creatives — discover unexpected words from a set of characters for creative writing exercises.
  • Competitive players — practice building fast pattern recognition for tournament-level play.

Why Two-Letter Words Matter

In competitive Scrabble and Words With Friends, two-letter words are among the most valuable plays in the game. They allow players to hook onto existing tiles, open up premium squares, and score points in tight situations where longer words won't fit. This tool fully supports all standard two-letter words recognized in official dictionaries.

Common two-letter words like QI, ZA, XI, and OX can be worth far more than their length suggests, especially when played across double or triple letter/word score tiles. Knowing all possible two-letter combinations from your rack is a fundamental skill at every level of competitive play.

Understanding Letter Frequency

One of the most important features of this tool is its strict enforcement of letter frequency. If you enter the letters AABCDE, the tool knows you have two A's available — and will return words that use up to two A's, but not three. This mirrors exactly how tile-based games work in practice.

Many other anagram tools ignore letter frequency entirely, returning words you couldn't actually play. This tool is designed to be genuinely practical, not just theoretically complete.

Privacy & No Sign-Up Required

No account needed. No personal data collected. No subscription required. Just enter your letters and get results instantly. We believe useful tools should be frictionless, fast, and private. Your searches are not stored or associated with any identifier. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

Technology Stack

Results are powered by the Datamuse API, a free, high-quality word search engine built on a large curated English dictionary. Datamuse supports sophisticated pattern matching including character classes and wildcards, which this tool uses to maximize result coverage.

Word definitions are sourced separately from the Free Dictionary API, which provides phonetics, parts of speech, and usage examples for most standard English words. The application itself is built with React and runs entirely in your browser — no server-side processing of your searches occurs.

Accuracy & Limitations

The tool aims to return all valid English dictionary words formable from your input. However, the underlying Datamuse API has a result limit of 1,000 words per query, and extremely obscure, archaic, or highly specialized terms may occasionally be omitted from its database.

For official competitive play, always cross-reference results against the official word list used in your tournament (TWL for North American Scrabble, SOWPODS/Collins for international play). This tool is designed for practice, assistance, and exploration — not as a final arbiter of word validity.
